Ayurvedic tongue assessment determines the state of digestion in a person’s body. A practitioner looks for signs of ama, or undigested material, which would signify that digestion is not occurring properly. While there are many signs that digestion can be out of order ama is a factor which, if present, changes recommendations and therapy entirely. For example, if arthritis with the presence of ama is addressed as if no ama is present, it can be aggravated significantly, making the patient feel worse rather than better. Recognizing, tracking, and addressing ama is integral to Ayurvedic therapy.
